Team USA completed a clean sweep in the afternoon foursomes to roar 7-1 clear of Great Britain and Ireland at the PGA Cup in Sunriver Resort, Oregon.

Glasson professional Colm Moriarty was beaten 6&5 alongside Toby Hunt by Jesse Mueller and John Somers in the morning four balls. Ireland’s only representative at the PGA Cup was rested for the afternoon foursomes which the USA took 4-0.

GB&I started well with Craig Lee and Paul McKechnie winning the top fourball match on Friday morning, beating Michael Block and Jeremy Wells 1UP to draw first blood.

But that’s as good as it got for the visitors who lost the next seven matches across four balls and foursomes.

The USA need just 13 points to retain the cup while Great Britain and Ireland face a mammoth task to acquire the 13.5 points they need to win back the cup for the first time since 2017.

Captain Tim Rouse said after the day’s play: “We had a very cold start with a two-hour fog delay, but once we got going our boys played really well. I’m really proud of them – they played their hearts out for me. It was one of those days where the Americans just had the magic, they even holed two shots from the fairway on the same hole, so it just gave them the momentum and the edge that they had.

“But tomorrow we’re looking for a big swing – our guys are up for the fight, they fought back to level on a number of occasions today and then it was snatched away from them. I trust what they can do. I’m looking to put some more points on the board obviously but I’m convinced they can fight back in the singles so if we can close that gap tomorrow and give us a fighting chance for the singles I’ll be delighted.”
