Just two weeks removed from his front row seat to Shane Lowry’s Irish Open exhibition at Doonbeg, US President Donald Trump is expected to be at Medinah Country Club for the final day of the Presidents Cup.
Trump, who was confirmed as the event’s Honorary Chairman last month, will be on site to cheer on the American team versus the Internationals like he was at last year’s Ryder Cup against Team Europe at Bethpage Black.
Two-time US Open champion Wyndham Clark has criticised the flat atmosphere at the biennial contest so far this week after the US took a slender 3-2 lead after the day one fourballs. But he believes the sight of the President watching from the sidelines will give everyone a boost.
“Being an American, having the President of the United States come and watch you play golf is something, as a kid, you don’t ever imagine or fathom happening,” he said. “I just think it’s pretty amazing.”
Sam Burns, who did most of the heavy lifting as he and Scottie Scheffler came from behind to beat Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im in the opening fourball match, feels political views should be put aside and has called for unity in the President’s presence.
“Being an American, I think it’s very important that we do support our president, regardless of your political views,” said Burns.
“I think if you look at our country now, it seems more divided than ever, and hopefully we can get back to the point where all Americans come together, and we’re all trying to kind of reach the same goal.”
Trump was of course on site for rounds three and four of the Amgen Irish Open at his owned Doonbeg resort where Shane Lowry won by a record eleven shots.
Security measures were at an extreme level while there were protests in the nearby village of Doonbeg against Trump’s arrival.
