Paul Eivers took the pro-am spoils at Sutton Golf Club with a team score of 51 points and his tail is up heading into the group stages of the Annesley Williams 9-Hole Matchplay this weekend.
Eivers of Cahir Park admits the Sutton Matchplay event which pits the top-32 in the Elavon order of merit against each other in a round robin format is a special week that the players always look forward to.
“Struck the ball nicely today so it was an enjoyable round. Sutton is a wonderful golf course and this is an event we look forward to quite a bit throughout the year so it is nice to get here and nice to play well.
“It’s a standout event being a matchplay and the support we receive in the clubhouse from the members is phenomenal and that just adds to it. It’s a very different event.”
Eivers has been drawn into a mouthwatering group on paper with David Higgins, Hazel Kavanagh and seven-time winner this season, Richard Kilpatrick. But he is confident that he can rise to the challenge.
“I think it’s a group of death. I hit the ball well today and have hit it well all year so I am looking forward to going out and doing battle with the guys.”
Eivers has been drawn into group six but it is group seven that is the real pool of death with PGA in Ireland captain Simon Thornton, Niall Kearney and Colm Moriarty drawn alongside popular veteran Jimmy Bolger who will be looking to pull more than one scalp on Saturday morning.
Sutton’s own Paddy Devine has been grouped with Ian Halpin, Brian McCormack and Michael McGeady while defending champion Neil O’Briain will have to escape the group of Joe Dillon, Cian Geraghty and Richard O’Donovan.
