A late birdie from David Howard kept his hopes of progressing from Stage One of DP World Tour Q-School alive after the opening day in Hulencourt, Belgium.
Howard birdied the par-3 17th to end the day on one-under-par with a 71 and in a share of 21st place.
The top-19 and ties will qualify for Stage Two next month with Howard just one shot off the mark.
Howard has had a terrific summer where he qualified for the Open Championship for the first time at Royal Birkdale where his Cystic Fibrosis story has inspired on the global stage.
The Fota Island amateur narrowly missed the cut and despite helping Ireland to Home Internationals glory in Woodbrook last month, he was not selected for this week’s Walker Cup as Great Britain and Ireland take on USA in Lahinch starting on Saturday.
Howard was named on Ireland’s mid-amateur squad for the upcoming European Team Championships.
