Dylan Keating has work to do to get back into contention at the First Stage of DP World Tour Q-School despite opening with a one-under 71 on day one at Golfclub Schloss Ebreichsdorf in Austria.
Keating lies in a share of 35th place, eight shots off the leader Richard Sarkozi of Hungary, although he is just two shots outside the all important top-19 and ties which would progress to next month’s Second Stage.
The Seapoint man began his day on the back nine and after dropping a shot on the 10th, he burst in to life with an eagle on the par-5 11th. The North of Ireland amateur champion and Irish international looked at home at this level with a birdie at the par-3 16th and a birdie on the par-4 1st to reach three-under.
Keating let potentially costly shots slip late on with bogeys on the 7th and 9th. He will be looking to make up the ground over the next 54 holes.
The 24-year-old is Ireland’s lone representative as he aims to join Ronan Mullarney, Dermot McElroy, Thomas Higgins, Niall Kearney and John Ross Galbraith who had previously made it through their First Stage qualifiers.
