Four irish girls are among the 64 set to contest the knockout stages at the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship at Craigielaw in Scotland with Molly Campbell the pick of the quartet over 36 holes.
The 17-year-old, representing Hollinwell Golf Club in Nottingham, shot a one-under round of 70 to end the strokeplay portion at level-par and tied for 10th and she takes the number 11 seed into matchplay where she’ll face stiff competition in Spain’s Amanda Revuelta as the 18-year-old is the 11th-ranked amateur female in Europe.
Royal Portrush’s Hannah Lee-McNamara, also 17, began round two at level-par but despite taking four strokes more, her +4 tally was enough to see her finish tied for 30th and she takes on 14-year-old French prodigy, Eléa Bastoni.
Ella Cantwell, the inaugural winner of the West of Ireland Women’s Amateur Open, opened with a five-over 76 but an eagle and two birdies helped her to a level-par second round that saw her finish tied for 34th. Awaiting her in the round of 64 is 16-year-old German YooNa Bae, a prolific winner on the German amateur circuit in both women’s and girls’ events.
Zoe McLean-Tattan completes the quartet, shooting a one-over 72 to finish tied for 45th at +6. The 18-year-old from Romford – a former Irish Girls’ Amateur Open winner – now plays Anahie Lohner-Hutzie of Switzerland.
With an even 64 players finishing at +7 or better, Olivia Costello (+10), Gemma McMeekin and Kayleigh Mulholland (+15) and Claudia O’Donoghue (+16) all missed out.
Top seed goes to Germany’s Lena Geier who opened with a 67 and followed up with a level-par 71 to earn medallist honours.
