Rowan Lester is off to a solid start at the Sunshine Tour’s Limpopo Championship at Euphoria Golf in northeast South Africa and sits just outside the top 10 with Liam Grehan also inside the top 30.
Playing together in the final group off the 10th tee in round one, Lester and Grehan had contrasting starts, with the former making two pars and a birdie on the par-5 12th, and the latter carding two bogeys and then eagling the par-5.
Lester added another birdie on 14, but dropped a shot on 18 to turn at -1. His third birdie of the day came on the par-5 third, but he was quickly back at level-par after double bogeying the fourth, before a strong finish saw him birdie two of the remaining five to shoot a two-under round of 70 that was good for a share of 11th.
Having battled his way back to level-par with the eagle on 12, Grehan dropped further shots on 16 and 17, then made back-to-back birdies on one and two and though another bogey followed on the seventh, he closed out with a birdie on nine to end the day on level-par and part of a 20-man group tied for 29th.
South African Jacques Blaauw holds sole possession of the lead after a bogey-free 66, one ahead of fellow countryman Cole Stevens, with a third South African in Tynan Snyders sharing third with Germany’s Morris Schniefner who share third on four-under.
