Royal Portursh’s Hannah Lee-McNamara is best placed of the eight Irish competing in the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship at Craigielaw Golf Club in Scotland.
144 girls, with five continents represented, compete over 36 holes of strokeplay with the leading 64 after two rounds advancing to knockout matchplay.
Fresh from finishing runner-up to Katie Poots in the AIG Irish Women’s Amateur Close Championship at Enniscrone, 17-year-old Lee-McNamara teed off just after midday and shot a level-par 71 that featured three birdies – including one on the par-5 18th – a bogey and a double bogey to end the day tied for 13th.
One shot behind and tied for 17th is Hollinwell’s Molly Campbell, while Kayleigh Mulholland who shot a three-over 74 is tied for 43rd.
One shot outside the provisional qualification mark are Zoe McLean-Tattan, Ella Cantwell, and Olivia Costello on +5, with Gemma McMeekin two further adrift on +7.
Claudia O’Donoghue on +10 and tied for 133rd completes the Irish contingent, and hopes are strong that at least four of the eight will find themselves in the matchplay draw for Wednesday morning.
The low score of the day belonged to 16-year-old German Celine Volckens who birdied eight of the first 13 holes and ended the day at -5, one clear of another of Germany’s up-and-coming talents in Lena Geier, who is a year older than Volckens.
Of the dozen girls in red figures, there are four Germans, two Swedes, and one each from Spain, Switzerland, Scotland, Czech Republic, Hong King and England.
