Edmondstown’s Anna Abom and Hannah Lee-McNamara of Royal Portrush will be the sole Irish contestants in the final round of the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship in Sweden, but hopes of a victory look over after Abom’s one-over 73 saw her slip outside the top 20 and 10 shots back.
The reigning South of Ireland Women’s Amateur champion had made a significant move up the leaderboard with a two-under 70 in round two but four bogeys and just the one birdie in her first 16 holes in round three saw her tumble down the board before closing birdies on 17 and 18 at Allerum Golf got her moving back in the right direction.
She goes into the final round tied for 24th but just three shots from seventh and a strong closing effort could propel her into the top 10 at the end of the week.
Lee-McNamara shot a four-over 76 to fall into a share of 59th place, making the 54-hole cut on the number, while Kate Dillon, the only other Irishwoman to make the 36-hole cut wasn’t able to close the ground to the top 60 and missed out by three.
England’s Charlotte Naughton now leads after shooting the low round of the day and her 67 moved her to -8 overall and into a two-shot lead over Maja Ortengren of Sweden with Frenchwoman Sara Brentcheneff two further back in solo third.
