Tiger Woods will not compete in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, meaning that the 15-time major champion will miss all four majors for the second year in succession.
As first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig, Woods did not submit an entry for this year’s 154th Open Championship before last week’s deadline, and has not appeared in a tournament setting since the 2024 Open at Royal Troon.
The California native’s absence comes as little surprise in the wake of his car crash in Florida back in March and subsequent DUI charge after which he stepped away from the game to receive treatment.
“This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he said following the incident in March.
“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”
Woods had been the frontrunner to lead the United States team as Ryder Cup captain at Adare Manor next September, but removed himself from consideration before the role was assinged to Jim Furyk.
Furyk is still hoping that Woods could play some part, however.
“We haven’t spoken yet,” he told reporters ahead of the PGA Championship. “I think, out of kind of courtesy and for him, his family, and I know maybe a road to health, I haven’t reached out, but I will. Definitely.”
Woods is currently in Switzerland at an upscale rehabilitation facility, having briefly returned home to Florida last week to be with his partner Vanessa Trump – former wife of the U.S. President’s son, Donald Jr – who was diagnosed with breast cancer.
