Cameron Clark waited 48 years to finally get playing an event in Ballymena where he was born and lived his earliest years, but he cut a slightly frustrated figure as he closed out with a par for a two-over 74 on day one of the NI Legends at Galgorm.
“Yeah, I didn’t have my best day today,” he said afterwards. “It was a tough day. It was very blustery, and, you know, I just didn’t quite have it today and didn’t hole a thing. But you know, we just move on to tomorrow.”
With winds gusting north of 50 kmph at times, the closing stretch at Galgorm Castle in particular played tough, and even the holes playing downwind posed a significant challenge.
“There were a lot of crosswinds today and you know, even the downwind holes were tough,” he said. “You know, it’s just knowing sort of what club to hit, but then the ball could get knocked out of the air quite quickly if you’re going downwind so that was tough as well.
“But, yeah, I think you’ve just got to have good control of your golf ball and I just didn’t quite have that today.”
After a slow start to his rookie season on the Legends Tour, he’s been rounding into form nicely and last week’s T15 finish at the Staysure English Legends was his best result of the campaign. And he’s only seven off the lead so a good round on Saturday would likely result in a significant push up the leaderboard.
“Yeah, definitely,” he said when asked if he felt he could still be a factor at the business end of the leaderboard. “As I say, my game just wasn’t quite there today and, you know, hopefully have a better day tomorrow and start to pick up some birdies.”
