David Kitt clinched his third win of the year with a dominant 3&1 defeat of John Lazor to clinch the 5th Farrell Cup at The Stanwich Club in America.
The Athenry man had beaten Thomas McCarthy 4&3 in the semi-final and he continued his excellent play against Lazor in the decider. Kitt went 1UP after a birdie on the 6th and powered on from there moving four-up through eleven holes.
Lazor stopped the bleeding briefly with a win on 14 but Kitt sealed victory in style with a lengthy birdie putt on 15.
“I had a good year to date, I won two national championships in Ireland and had a lot of consistent golf I knew my game was going in the right direction. I was unsure because it’s such a different challenge over here compared to what we have at home. It’s great that I can see my game travels to the US,” said Kitt.
“That’s the reason we play golf, to win as many trophies as we can. It’s a great feeling and I definitely won’t get sick of it. They don’t come easy, in every tournament you play, there’s a turning point and that happened for me yesterday in my second-round match [against Ben Cooley of Huntingdon Valley].
“I was 1 down with two to play, made a great birdie on 17 to stay 1 down, had a 20-footer on the 18th to get to the 19th, on the first, and then had another great putt. It looked like I was losing that match, and then to come out on top, you need to get the breaks and they go your way when it’s your week. Thankfully that was the case for me this week.”
Kitt was pleased with how aggressively he played early in the final to try and establish a lead to hold on to and he admitted that it was a great feeling to hole a putt to win the title.
“I tried to get myself in front early, I hit so many fairways and so many greens so I had a lot of good chances early on.
“I got a good read off my caddie Chris, he was really good all week at keeping me steady on everything and was a great asset to have. I knew the putt was slow and with all the rain I made sure to give it a bit extra and it just dropped in at the end. Lovely way to finish, it’s nice to hole a putt to win as opposed to somebody missing.”
