Strandhill teenager Patrick Tuffy was the only player to break par at Galgorm Castle in the North of Ireland Amateur Championship Qualifier, and he finished two shots clear in the medallist position.

The 17-year-old birdied five of the 18 holes on the punishing Ballymena layout, with four bogeys leaving him with a one-under-par 69, with Carton House duo Mark Greenwood and Christopher Caulfield sharing second place at one-over.

With 30 places in the Championship outright at Royal Portrush on offer, an 11-for-four playoff was needed for those finishing on +8. Galgorm Castle’s own Jonny Hall was the first man to advance, and he was swiftly joined by Dylan Harbourne of Grange.

Ballybofey and Stranorlar’s Odhran McBride and Jamie Doyle of Rosslare made it through on the fifth playoff hole, and Belvoir Park’s Evan Hogg is the first man on the waiting list.
