Rory McIlroy hopes to give third-round leader Keita Nakajima and his nearest challengers “something to think about” by posting a testing clubhouse target during the final round of the DP World India Championship on Sunday.
The World Number Two will go into the fourth day seven shots off the lead on ten under par after adding a third-round 68 to his back-to-back 69s at Delhi Golf Club.
That leaves him with some serious catching up to do over the final 18 holes but the Northern Irishman is relishing the opportunity to set a tough target.
He said: “I finished the round off pretty well again. Made a couple of birdies coming in.
“I felt like I missed a lot of putts today. I gave myself a lot of chances and felt like I squandered a few.
“I should probably be a few shots better than I am, but another solid day and hopefully a low one tomorrow and post a score and at least give the guys up ahead something to think about.”
McIlroy’s Ryder Cup team-mate Viktor Hovland is two shots better off going into the final round after firing a flawless 66 on Saturday.
The Norwegian, who has made just one bogey all week – at the third on Thursday – is enjoying his time in India and would love to finish in style on Sunday.
He said: “I just enjoy travelling the world and playing all these tournaments, and adding a win in India, I think it’s really, really cool to play in front of these fans and play a really unique golf course.
“Yeah, it would be really, really cool. But a lot of work left.”
