Lahinch’s Aideen Walsh finds herself just one shot off the lead and in solo second position after the opening round of the European Mid-Amateur Championships at Quinta do Peru in Portugal.
The Clare woman made three birdies and five bogeys in an opening two-over 74 on a day of tough scoring on the course just south of Lisbon, and only Canadian Haley Yerxa fared better though none of the 53 participants shot level-par or better.
Walsh is far from the only Irish woman in contention, however, as Laytown & Bettystown’s Ellen O’Gorman is in hot pursuit in a share of third +3. O’Gorman made four birdies but also carded two double bogeys in her opening round, and she’s one shot ahead of Clodagh Coughlan of Douglas on +4 and tied for eighth.
Clandeboye’s Jessica Ross is tied for 13th at +6, with Ballinrobe’s Shannon Burke (+7) and Doonbeg’s Aoife Kelly (+8) also still in the running and positioned well inside the cutline which will see the top 33 and ties advance to Saturday’s final round.
