Kate Lanigan will be hunting her second title at the Home of Golf as she lies just one shot off the lead on six-under heading into the final round of the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews.

Lanigan, who tasted success on the Old Course twelve months ago when she won the R&A Student Series Order of Merit, had the first round lead with a seven-under 68 on the New Course.

A second round of 76 in the afternoon dropped her to a share of third place while Katie Poots of Knock and Clandeboye’s Jessica Ross are a shot further back in sixth with five-under-par totals.

Lanigan (Hermitage) put on late, late shows in both rounds with three birdies in a row on 16, 17 and 18 in the morning before a sensational eagle on the 18th in the afternoon kept her hopes alive.

Poots who clinched the Ulster Strokeplay last week carded an eagle in each round, eagling the par-5 8th on her way to a morning 70 before repeating the feat on the par-5 10th as she ground out an afternoon 75.

Ross, who also carded rounds of 70 and 75 to match Poots, bookended her second round with birdies which included two in her last three holes to keep her in contention.

Davina Xanh and Luca Thompson share the lead on seven-under-par.

Zoe Mclean-Tattan of Romford is well placed on one-under after rounds of 71 and 78 while Roisin Scanlon saw a fine morning effort of 70 wiped out by an 83 to lie on three-over.

The final round will be played on the Old Course.
