Golf Ireland is pleased to announce the finalisation of three rounds of funding through the Sports Energy Support Scheme (SESS).

This critical support, made possible through the Government and Sport Ireland, has helped alleviate rising energy costs faced by golf clubs. A total of €2.1 million was distributed to eligible clubs, enabling them to sustain operations and maintain facilities during a challenging period of soaring energy prices.

The funding, rolled out in phases from November 2022 through August 2023, was designed to assist golf clubs that faced significant increases in energy bills. The scheme also encouraged clubs to invest in sustainability measures, such as renewable energy options, and to commit to broader Golf Ireland initiatives like the Women in Golf Charter and Safeguarding responsibilities.

Mark Kennelly, CEO of Golf Ireland, expressed his gratitude to the Government and Sport Ireland for their continued support:
“This funding has been instrumental in helping golf clubs manage the financial burden caused by rising energy costs. We are thankful to the Government and Sport Ireland for recognising the impact on our sport and for providing this essential support. The funds have not only helped clubs remain operational but also enabled them to invest in sustainable solutions for their long-term future.”

Several clubs have shared their appreciation for the scheme and the impact it has had on their operations:

Beech Park Golf Club:
“We would like to acknowledge the excellent work done by Golf Ireland in the setup, administration, and processing of the 3 phases of the Sports Energy Support Grants. The funds we received went a long way to mitigating the substantial increased energy costs over the last couple of years.”

Tramore Golf Club:
“The surge in energy costs had placed immense pressure on our operations. Thanks to Golf Ireland’s support, we’ve been able to maintain our course and clubhouse without compromising on quality. It’s been a tremendous relief, and we’re also exploring renewable energy options to become more sustainable.” — Pat Murray, General Manager

Royal Tara Golf Club:
“Without the financial assistance provided by the Government Sports Energy Support Scheme, administered through Golf Ireland, our membership fees and green fees would have seen a significant rise. This would likely have led to a reduction in both member and visitor numbers.”
