A holed 26-foot putt on the 18th green at Bay Hill by Wyndham Clark cost Shane Lowry $400,000, but the Offaly man’s third place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational still sees him earn a cheque for $1.4 million, his biggest payday since winning the Open Championship in 2019

Harbouring hopes of the $4 million top prize and the red cardigan that goes with it, it wasn’t to be for Lowry as Scottie Scheffler put his putting woes behind him and displayed a skillset worthy of the world number one ranking to finish five ahead of Clark, who gets $1.8 million for his efforts.

Seamus Power and Rory McIlroy will have conflicting emotions after both finishing tied for 21st. The former will see it as a good week, as valuable FedEx Cup points, and nearly a quarter of a million in earnings, the latter will see it as another ‘what might have been’ week and will wonder quite how 20 players finished ahead of him given that only Scheffler drove the ball better over the four days. A minor consolation – and only minor – will be that he’s wrapped up the number one ranking on the DP World Tour’s International Swing and will receive a bonus payment of €200,000, but it would’ve taken a brave man to tell him to ‘turn his frown upside down’ because of this.

McIlroy’s fellow clubman Tom McKibbin continues to rack up good finishes back on the DP World Tour, but the two Down men can empathise with each other as the younger superstar laments a triple-bogey start to his final round that all but put an end to his title ambitions at the Jonsson Workwear Open in South Africa.

Still, almost €30,000 in earnings is a good week’s work in most languages, and he’s averaging around €150 for every shot he’s taken on the DP World Tour in 2024.

Abraham Ancer was the big winner at LIV Hong Kong, winning his first LIV title and the $4 million that accompanied, while Paul Casey and Cameron Smith each settled for $1.875 million after losing out in the playoff. Joaquin Niemann now has a two wins, a 59, a hole-in-one, and over $13 million in prizemoney, all earned in four LIV starts after he aced the eighth hole in the final round and collected $900,000 for finishing solo fourth.

Graeme McDowell continues to impress and top up the bank balance, as the Portrush man finished tied for eighth and was rewarded why just shy of $400,000, taking his season’s earnings close to $2 million.

On the LPGA circuit, Bailey Tardy birdied five of her final seven holes to open her LPGA win account at Blue Bay Golf Club in China, taking home $330,000 to accompany, while Stephanie Meadow, making just her second LPGA start of 2024, recorded her first top-10 finish since last year’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and was rewarded with more than $56,000 for her efforts.
