Rory McIlroy feels the PGA Tour would benefit from being more “cut throat” in a bid to increase its competitiveness.

The world number two was speaking after his second round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill which is a signature event on the PGA Tour with the top-50 and ties making the halfway cut in the 69-player field.

At one stage during the second round only four players were outside the cut mark. By the end of play, eleven players were eliminated from the field.

The purpose of having a cut in a limited field event has been the topic of debate this year and McIlroy wasn’t fully on board with the idea when it was announced.

“I was indifferent. I think, when all these signature events were thought of, we were thinking no cut, but if it’s important enough, or if it’s that important to Tiger and Jack and if Arnold were alive, if it was important enough for him, then it’s their tournament, at the end of the day, and they can do whatever they want.

“I could have went either way, but if it’s important enough to those guys, then we’ll have a cut.”

The Holywood man has called for a Champions League style global tour in recent months and feels the PGA Tour would benefit from putting a squeeze on playing cards in future.

“I’m all for making it more cut throat, more competitive. Probably won’t be very popular for saying this, but I’m all for less players and less TOUR cards, and the best of the best.”
