Rory McIlroy insists his desire in the game of golf is to add his name alongside legends who have gone before him rather than sign a potential multi-million dollar contract with LIV Golf.

Over the last few months McIlroy had appeared to soften his stance on the Saudi backed tour saying he had been “too judgemental” of the breakaway tour, even stating that there should be no punishment for LIV players who want to return to the PGA Tour.

This prompted his former manager Chubby Chandler to say that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Holywood man joined LIV as the PGA Tour’s negotiations with the Public Investment Fund continue.

“It’s not for me,” McIlroy said on Thursday in an on camera interview with ESPN. “I’m too much of a traditionalist. I love winning golf tournaments and looking at the trophy and seeing that Sam Snead won this trophy or Ben Hogan or Gene Sarazen or Jack Nicklaus or Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Nick (Faldo), whoever it is. The people that came before me.

“That, to me, is a big deal in our game.”

Although he doesn’t want to join Greg Norman and co, the four-time major winner still wants to see both tours come together.

“If we were to all put our heads together and be like, okay, what can we do to all come back together and move forward and be a little more cohesive?’

“Then I would sort of be for that.”
