Golf Ireland has issued a message of congratulations to Leona Maguire on her historic performance at the Solheim Cup.
The Cavan golfer was the first Irish player to represent Europe in the event and ended the week at the leading points scorer, remaining unbeaten in her five matches. Maguire was key to Europe winning the Solheim Cup in the USA for only the second time in the event’s history, scoring 4.5 points at the Inverness Club.
Speaking on Tuesday after the event, Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly said it was a seismic weekend for golf in the country:
“The last three days in Ohio will inspire young girls and boys in Ireland to emulate Leona to play at the highest level.
“From her win on Saturday morning with Mel Reid against the Korda sisters, up to last night’s triumph in the singles against Jennifer Kupcho, Leona has shown the world the talent we always knew she had.
“A product of our grassroots systems, all the way up to currently being a Team Ireland Golf player, Leona’s prowess as an amateur is now being shown fully to those in the professional ranks.
“She is a credit to her family and community, and is a tremendous global ambassador for Irish golf.”
