Four All-Ireland Champions were crowned on Wednesday at Clontarf Golf Club as the Underage Cups and Shields Finals came to a close.

County Sligo ended a run of four unsuccessful appearances in a row at the All-Ireland Finals to capture the Girls’ Inter-Club title, winning in the final against Kanturk by 2.5 points to 0.5.

“It’s absolutely class,” said Ella Rose Feeney, Co. Sligo Girls’ Captain. “We all played so well. Jessica [Reynolds] in particular had a really tough match this morning but she kept her chin up and did really well. I think we all just played fantastic golf the whole way through.”

Feeney was 2 down in her match with just 3 holes to play but battled back to take the win against Katie Savage.

“Patricia, our team Captain, came over and said to just take it shot-by-shot so that’s what I did and I was all square by the 18th and stripped it down the fairway thank god. It really was a team effort,” finished Feeney.

The Boys’ Inter-Club Finals format takes the shape of 18-holes stableford, where the best 3 scores of 5 count towards the team total.

Connacht Regional Champions Claremorris took home the spoils with a total of 114 points, 3 clear of Edenmore in second place. Gowran Park finished in 3rd place while local team Clontarf were 4th.

Roganstown were hoping for double success in the Fred Daly Trophy and Boys’ Junior Foursomes, having reached the final in both events.

With two matches a piece in their battle against Naas in the Fred Daly, Charlie Kelly and Conor Culhane brought their tie to the 19th, where Kelly secured the important final point for Roganstown.

Four of the five players on the Roganstown team won the AIG Men’s Senior Cup at the weekend, now adding a boys’ title to their dream week.

“That was stressful now,” an exhausted Kelly said following his match. “Sunday was a perfect day, it really was. It couldn’t have went better. Yesterday the 5 of us were quite tired, we won but we weren’t right there. This morning we played well again, got back on the horse. This evening was touch and go and Naas were very good today.

“I was 1-down coming down 18 and knew I needed at least a birdie to bring it into a playoff and I had this shot around the trees and hit probably one of the best shots of my life. The perfect shot at the perfect time. I’m over the moon.”

It wasn’t to be however for the North-Dublin side in the Boys’ Junior Foursomes as the Castletroy team of Paddy Hussey, Evan O’Leary, Darragh Humphreys and Paddy Lawlor sealed the title. The Limerick team, led by Miriam Ingerton, narrowly defeated Tipperary in this morning’s semi-final when tie holes were needed to separate the two.
