Kinsale’s John Murphy enjoyed a tied sixth finish as his form continued to trend in the right direction at the Jones Cup Invitational at Sea Island.

The University of Louisville star, who shared 16th place in January’s Southwestern Invitational, saved his best round of the week ‘til last, picking up shots at three of his closing five holes in a two-under par 70 around Ocean Forest Golf Club. Having earlier posted rounds of 75 and 72, Murphy cut a late swathe through the field, finishing the tournament three shots back of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg who topped the board at two-under.

It’s a boost for Murphy’s Walker Cup hopes while he’s now ranked 29th in his bid to secure one of 15 Tour exemptions with the top-5 earning Korn Ferry cards and those placed 6-15 taking MacKenzie Tour status.

And Murphy wasn’t the only Irish Walker Cup hopeful competing at Sea Island with Kilkenny and Wake Forest star Mark Power taking a top-30 finish after rounds of 75, 74 and 75 to finish alongside Holywood’s Tom McKibbin at eight-over after the teenager returned scores of 73, 76 and 75 at the 54-hole event.
