Gladiators, ready? Inter-club draws published

Must Read

I Dreamed a Dream*

'It feels as if we have forsaken this beautiful game. We haven’t. We’ve just been biding our time under a swell of anger. Who among us has not practised a swing with nothing in our empty hands but hope?'

High time golf made a comeback

'My hope is that we’ll be playing golf again next week, and that those funnelling into green spaces with nowhere else to go will be given a few more options'

An Ode to Dustin Johnson

'Certain factions of the media take great pleasure in the portrayal of Dustin – and brother and caddie Austin on occasion – as being a little dim witted at best, and downright dumb at worst. This is a particular pet hate'

So Rory, where did it all go wrong?

Net worth of over $100million, four Majors, fourth best golfer in the world and on his Christmas holidays in mid-November, all at 31 years young. Still, no green jacket

The GUI’s plans for the commencement of a curtailed series of Inter-Club competitions are continuing to progress as the four Provincial Branches of the Union have, today, published their draws for the competitions.

Draws for the AIG Senior Cup, AIG Junior Cup, AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield, AIG Pierce Purcell Shield, Under-18 Inter-Club Championship and a number of provincial competitions have been circulated to participating clubs and are available to view on the relevant provincial pages on www.golfnet.ie.

In the meantime, the Union’s Rules and Competitions Committee have issued interim guidance on the playing of inter-club matches between clubs, with these due to commence on or after 20 July 2020.

The guidance is intended to be a practical toolkit for clubs and golfers participating in the matches, but given the pace at which public health measures are being updated in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a further update to this will be circulated before the 20 July.

In addition to the toolkit, the Rules and Competitions Committee has also updated the regulations for the Inter-Club competitions accordingly.

Given the tight timelines for the completion of inter-club matches, competing clubs and golfers are being asked to work with each other and the relevant Provincial Branch Office to ensure the timely completion of matches in a friendly and collaborative spirit.

The Union is continuing to work with Donegal Golf Club on plans for the staging of the All-Ireland Finals on 15-18 October 2020, although it may not be possible to finalise these plans until the end of September due to the lack of clarity as to the application of public health measures following Phase 4 of the Republic of Ireland’s Roadmap.

Further updates on the progress of our planning for the All-Ireland Finals will be made available to clubs as things progress. In the meantime, we are grateful to Donegal Golf Club for their continued cooperation and enthusiasm regarding the event.
