Ireland went into the Men’s event at Rungsted Golf Klub as second seeds and duly breezed past Germany 4-1.

Karl Bornemann and Jim Carville set Ireland on their way with a 2&1 win in the only foursomes match of the day before Ballybunion’s Peter Sheehan 2&1 and Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien 7&5 ensured Ireland’s safe passage to the semi-final with dominant singles wins.

Meanwhile at BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas, Ireland edged the Netherlands 3-2 in a much tighter affair to advance to the semi-finals of the European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship.

Second seeds Ireland got off to a flying start when Gertie McMullen and Maria O’Reilly raced to a 7&5 win in the foursomes.

However, the tide soon turned with Margaret McAuliffe and Alison Taylor turned over in the first two singles matches as the Dutch took control.

Laura Webb’s 2&1 win ensured Ireland’s fate would come down to Suzanne Corcoran in the last match and the Portumna star came up with the goods, edging a thriller 1UP on 18 to get her Irish team over the line to set up a Friday encounter with the old enemy England.
