After failing to break par in four consecutive rounds Rory McIlroy admits he is way off the standard required heading into the second event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

McIlroy finished third last at the FedEx St Jude Championship as he closed with a round of 72 in his first appearance since the Open Championship last month and his 15th of the season as world number one Scottie Scheffler roared to an eight shot victory.

“Obviously didn’t come in here with a ton of reps, (it) almost felt like the more the week went on the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit,” said McIlroy who was 66th of 68 players in Memphis on eight-over.

“The swing wasn’t in sync and obviously I didn’t do a ton of practice coming in here.

“I’m so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance. I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.”

At the moment the Holywood man feels he has little to no chance of competing for the BMW Championship in Bellerive this week unless he can cram in plenty of practice between now and Thursday.

The six-time major winner is 13th in the FedEx Cup rankings so has his passage to the Tour Championship as one of thirty players already secured as he chases a record fourth FedEx Cup crown and first since 2022.

“I guess nice to shake the rust off a little bit but I’m going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week.

“To me it’s more about obviously the execution of what I’m doing right now, and the execution wasn’t there this week.

“I’m going to have to sort of put the head down and grind from now until Thursday to try to feel like I have any sort of chance next week.”

Meanwhile, Shane Lowry’s PGA Tour season is over after he failed to qualify from 62nd position in the rankings with the top-50 progressing.

At the top, Scheffler left Sam Burns and Sungjae Im in his wake to record an eight shot victory on 17-under with a 66 as he clinched his first win since January.

I’ve have some close calls this year. It is always challenging playing with one of my best friends but going into today I wanted to do my best,” said Scheffler.

“I think I’ve been really consistent. That’s what I’m most proud of. It’s nice for it to pay off this week, this is a lot better feeling than having a statistically-good week.”
