Malone amateur Matthew McClean leads after the opening round of the George L. Coleman Invitational after a superb round of 67.

McClean hit the front in the mid-amateur event on five-under-par courtesy of three birdies and an eagle at Seminole.

The former US Mid-Amateur winner leads by the minimum from Evan Beck with Stewart Hagestad back in the pack on two-under.

McClean has an impressive record in US based events finishing third at the Western Amateur and the Crump Cup Memorial last year.

Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley is in a share of 45th place on four-over

Foley carded two double bogeys on his front nine and also mixed in two birdies and two bogeys.

Meanwhile in the senior section, Milltown’s Jody Fanagan is well placed on one-over and he shares eighth place, six shots off the pace set by RJ Nakashian

Fanagan bounced back from an early bogey with two birdies in three holes before the turn but gave those back with dropped shots at 10 and 13.
