The Irish Men’s team will advance to tomorrow’s semi-final of the European Team Championships in Royal Waterloo, Belgium after a 4-3 win over France.
Matt McClean clinched the winning point with a 1up win to keep the team in contention for a medal. McClean put the first point on the board this morning alongside Caolan Rafferty with a fantastic 5&4 win in their foursomes match. Max Kennedy won his singles match 4&3, followed by Alex Maguire with a 2&1 win to get the better of France. Ireland will take on Denmark in the morning foursomes, followed by evening singles.
The Boys’ team defeated Slovakia 4-1 this morning in Flight B. Aodhagon Brady and Gavin Tiernan won their foursomes match 2&1 followed by Sean Keeling with an early 7&6 win to put 2 points on the board for Ireland. Jack Murphy and Fionn Dobbin’s match both went the full way but a 1up win for each of them gave them victory over Slovakia. The Boys’ team will also take on Denmark in the morning.
The Women’s team lost out to England in the first round of match play after a 4.5-2.5 defeat. It was all was to play for in the afternoon’s singles after losing both foursomes matches in the morning. Sara Byrne led the singles matches out and put the first point on the board for Ireland with a 2&1 win. Kate Lanigan won her match 4&3 followed by Jessica Ross who halved her match to give Ireland its final half point. The Women will take on leading qualifiers Sweden in the morning.
The Girls’ team were defeated by leading qualifiers Spain, 6.5-0.5. Emma Fleming halved her singles match to give Ireland its only half point on the leaderboard. The Girls’ will be the third Irish team to be taking on Denmark tomorrow in Hossegor Golf Club, France.
