Purcell finishes with a flourish at Australian Amateur

Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell saved his best round of the week for last as he posted a three-under-par 69 to finish in a share of 32nd spot in
the Australian Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne.

The Irish International’s strong final day performance saw him end the tournament on six-over-par for 72 holes with Chinese Tapei’s Chun-An Yu taking the title on minus six.

Purcell will be left to wonder what might have been after an opening day 78 left him a mountain to climb in Melbourne but can take encouragement from a rousing finish so early in the season.

As for Ireland’s other competitor, Kinsale’s John Murphy finished well down the board on 16-over par despite a bright start to his week Down Under.

Murphy was just two-over-par at the halfway stage of the tournament but saw his chances fade with closing rounds of 77/81 resigning him to a distant share of 61st.

Next up is the Australian Men’s Amateur Championship from the 13th – 20th of Jan which takes place at Woodlands GC in Melbourne.
