The Great Britain and Ireland boys team to face the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Léglise Trophy match at Ballybunion in Ireland next month was announced by The R&A today.

Ireland’s Mark Power is the sole Irish player selected but his nomination as Captain says a lot about his abilities and the expectations surrounding him.

The GB&I team, which will be managed for the first time by Stuart Wilson, who will be looking to win back the Jacques Léglise Trophy after the Continent of Europe won a close encounter by 13 ½ to 11 ½ at Prince’s in Kent last year.

The nine player GB&I team for the match on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 September is:

Toby Briggs (17) / Dunston Hall, England
Alex Fitzpatrick (18) / Hallamshire, England
Luke Harries (18) / Tenby, Wales
Darren Howie (17) / Peebles, Scotland
Ben Jones (18) / Northamptonshire County, England
Thomas Plumb (18) / Sherborne, England
Mark Power (17) (Captain) / Kilkenny, Ireland
Charlie Strickland (18) / Ham Manor, England
Robin Williams (15) / Bishopsgate Golf Academy, England

Reserve:
Conor Gough (14) / Stoke Park, England

Four members of the GB&I team return from the 2016 match: Toby Briggs, Alex Fitzpatrick, Mark Power and Charlie Strickland. Strickland won the Peter McEvoy Trophy and the Duncan Putter in April and Power will be full of confidence after retaining his Irish Boys Championship title.

Among the newcomers to the team are Ben Jones and Darren Howie. Jones won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters in June while Howie was runner-up in that event and was the leading stroke play qualifier at last week’s Boys Amateur Championship at Nairn.

The format for the Jacques Léglise Trophy match is four foursomes ties each morning, eight singles matches on the afternoon of Friday 1 September and nine singles matches on the afternoon of Saturday 2 September.
