It’s the week before The Open Championship and you pretty much know that some of the big guns will use the week to practice and tweak their games while those seeking the last few spots in the Portrush field will be grinding hard. It’s also a new venue this week so that adds to the complexity of the equation. Rors starts favourite at the ridiculous odds of 6/1.

Doc’s Top-5 Best each-way Bets

Martin Kaymer 33/1

Martin Kaymer is one of the top order players yet to claim a place in the field at The Open and is overpriced at 33/1. Winner 10 years ago in Scotland and enjoying a return to form of late with a T8 in the British Masters, solo third at The Memorial, T16 in Germany and T9 in Ireland last week. Says himself he’s playing three good rounds from four and if he can fix that here he’ll be right in the mix this week.

Bernd Wiesberger 40/1

Spoke to his caddie Jamie last week and everything is rosy in the garden for team Wiesberger right now. The injury that plagued the Austrian last year is now a memory and he’s come back to win in Denmark, score a T16 in Germany and T2 in Lahinch last week. Historically hasn’t played well in Scotland, but in the form to contend.

Andy Sullivan 45/1

Improving in form through Germany (T26), Spain (T13) and Ireland (T2) where he showed superb consistency shooting 68, 66, 66, 66. Two top-10 finishes from his last three visits to Scotland and a win has to be coming soon for Andy.

Eddie Pepperell 30/1

His dog may have none but Eddie Pepperell is showing balls of steel on the links right now. T2 at Hillside last month was followed with another solid T4 in Lahinch demonstrating the advantage his quality ball-striking has on links. Solo second last year behind runaway winner Brandon Stone at Gullane and in-form to contend again.

Jorge Campillo 55/1

Sticking with Jorge after a T7 finish at the Irish Open where he hit 58 greens in regulation, 3rd in the field. Four top-3 finishes including a win in Morocco and nine top-20 finishes so far this season is a mighty haul for the stealthy Spaniard.

Long Odds Glory Shots

Gavin Green 90/1

Super odds each way on Gavin Green this week at 90/1. Brilliant form the past fortnight in Spain and Ireland and one those fighting for an Open spot.

Paul Waring 100/1

Watched a lot of Paul last week in Ireland where he scored another top-10 on links after Hillside last month. He’s also in the field for The Open. Super impressive and could score a place.

Grant Forrest 150/1

Fought back after a poor first round  to finish 14th in Ireland and one to watch this week for a top-10.
