Sergio Garcia has taken formal steps to exit his LIV Golf deal, filing a motion in bankruptcy court to terminate the contract as the breakaway league battles for its future, according to recent court filings.

The court documents, first reported by the Financial Times, show the Spaniard is seeking clarity on his status while LIV fights for survival. The move comes after the league lost financial backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in April, leaving serious doubts over its 2027 schedule.

In August, New York-based firm BC Partners stepped in as part of plans for a revamped “LIV 2.0”. LIV then filed for bankruptcy protection in early September, a step CEO Scott O’Neil described as the start of the league’s “next chapter”. Under the restructuring, a required number of players must commit to the new plans by 13 October before the league can press ahead.

Garcia’s legal team has now asked the court to end his existing agreement. The filing argues that while the contract remains in place, tournament organisers, sponsors and other partners may hesitate to deal with him because of competing commitments. “That uncertainty is particularly acute for a professional athlete, whose tournament schedule, sponsorship arrangements, and participation in other events must be planned well in advance, and whose competitive career is necessarily finite,” it states.

The Fireballs GC star appears to be seeking a clear path that would allow him to join a rival tour without contractual obstacles.

Garcia has already signalled his intention to return to the DP World Tour in 2027. He joined LIV in 2022 and initially resigned his European membership, before rejoining the DP World Tour for the 2025 season. After missing out on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team, he chose not to renew for 2026.

The news arrives as LIV faces further legal pressure, with the new host venue for its Adelaide event taking the league to court over the future of that popular tournament.

Garcia’s potential return to the DP World Tour will be watched with interest as the Spaniard holds the record for most points won in a Ryder Cup and has expressed his desire to tee it up in the game’s premier team competition once again.
