Rowan Lester and Liam Grehan both shot rounds in red figures on Saturday at the Sunshine Tour’s Rwanda Open, but on another day of low scoring at Kigali Golf Resort, they’re both well down the leaderboard.
Lester began the day at six-under after an opening 68 followed by a rollercoaster round of 70 that included a first career hole-in-one on his third-to-last hole. It was another up-and-down round on Saturday. Three bogeys, three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth resulted in another two-under 70, but he slipped down one place on the leaderboard to tied for 40th.
Grehan produced a bogey-free 68 on Friday to make the cut on the number and he started in the same vein on Saturday. Five birdies over his first 15 holes sent him shooting up the leaderboard, but back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 saw him fall one behind Lester at -7 and into a share of 50th.
It was a day marred with weather interruptions, but eventually all 67 who made the cut completed their rounds and South Africa’s Kyle de Beer and England’s Joe Sullivan are locked in a race to claim their first Sunshine Tour titles as they head into Sunday’s final round tied for the lead.
De Beer signed for a 66 and Sullivan a 68 to each sit on 19-under-par. They are one stroke clear of the South African duo of Cole Stevens and Estiaan Conradie.
Sullivan started the day with a one-shot lead but his bogey-free round was not enough to stave off the challenge from De Beer.
“I’m very happy with how the day went,” said De Beer.
“I didn’t hit the ball exactly how I would’ve liked. I was a little bit shaky off the tee especially, and I had a couple of iffy lies to play out of the rough quite a few times. But I managed that quite well today, which was nice. The iron play and the short game was really solid which was cool. I was able to benefit from that, and to make a nice putt to finish was a big bonus.”
