Ronan Mullarney backed up his opening 67 with a one-under 69 to lie tied for fourth at the DP World Tour Q-School First Stage Qualifier at Durham Forest Golf and Country Club just outside Manchester.
The Galway man made four birdies and three bogeys on a day where just 15 of the 78 competing broke par, and he’s the only one of nine Irishmen (eight and Durham Forest and John Murphy alone at Arlandastad in Sweden) currently inside the provisional qualification places at the halfway marks.
Murphy shot a four-over 74 to slip to +5 and into a share of 58th place and with the top 19 and ties advancing from that qualifier, he’s five shots off the mark at present.
It’s the top 18 and ties who move on from Durham Forest, and Luke O’Neill who lies tied for 24th at +2 after rounds of 72 and 70 is next best of the Irish, with Dermot McElroy (+3) and James Sugrue (+4) all within touching distance with 36 holes to go.
Paul Conroy (+6) and Robert Brazill and Marc Boucher (+8) will all need to go low over the final 36 holes if they’re to get themselves back in contention and hopefully join Thomas Higgins, Niall Kearney and John Ross Galbraith who have already punched their tickets to Second Stage which is held at four Spanish venues at the end of October.
