Ronan Mullarney’s three-under-par round of 67 sees the Galway man tied for second after the opening round of the DP World Tour Q-School First Stage Qualifier at Dunham Forest in Altrincham.
Mullarney is one of eight Irish in the field – by far the most to compete in any of the 10 First Stage Qualifiers – and the 30-year-old carded four birdies, three bogeys and an eagle in his opening round to be one of four players in a tie for second, with England’s Angus Flanagan all on his own out front with a five-stroke lead at -8.
With the leading 18 players and ties advancing, Mullarney is in a strong position, albeit with 54 holes remaining, while Dermot McElroy and Robert Brazill are both one shot off the provisional qualification mark at +1.
John Murphy is the sole Irish contestant at Arlandastad Golf in Sweden where the top 19 and ties will advance, and he lies tied for 28th at +1, also one shot off the early mark.
Luke O’Neill is tied for 36th on +2 at Durnham Forest, with James Sugrue and Marc Boucher two shots further adrift at +4. Paul Conroy (+5) and Tom Dowdall (+6) have additional ground to make up at 62nd and 72nd respectively, with the field cut to just the leading 60 players and ties after 36 holes.
