Liam Grehan was hoping to be celebrating his first Sunshine Tour victory on Friday night after entering the final round of the SunBet Challenge at Wild Coast Sun Country Club just one shot off the lead.

It didn’t pan out the way he’d have liked on another very blustery day in Port Edward on the east coast of South Africa, but a eventual T12 finish on -3, five shots behind the eventual winner, saw him rise to 57th in the Sunshine Tour rankings having returned from the mid-season break just inside the top 100.

It was an up-and-down day overall, as he made early bogeys on one and three but did manage to claw his way to one-under for the day at the turn.

The back nine has proved to be the tougher of the two all week and four bogeys and two birdies resulted in 71 strokes and he narrowly missed out on getting his second top-10 finish in his last three starts.

Rowan Lester’s week closed out with a two-over 72 to finish in solo 55th at +4, and he dropped to 74th in the rankings.

A closing 65 – the joint low round of the day – was enough to give South Africa’s Jean Hugo a one-stroke victory, with fellow countryman Nikhil Rama taking solo second at -7.
