Inaugural winners crowned at Louth Junior County Close Championship

Four champions have been crowned as five Louth clubs come together for hugely successful county-wide junior championship

The inaugural Louth Junior County Close Championship has been hailed as a major success after bringing together junior golfers from Dundalk, County Louth, Ardee, Greenore and Seapoint Golf Clubs for a three-round championship across some of the county’s leading courses.

The pilot event, which featured U15 Boys, U19 Boys, U16 Girls and U20 Girls divisions, provided a new competitive platform for young golfers while showcasing the outstanding talent, sportsmanship and camaraderie within junior golf across County Louth.

The championship was played across Dundalk Golf Club, Seapoint Golf Links and County Louth Golf Club, Baltray, with four inaugural champions writing their names into the history of the event.

David Bohill continued his excellent run of form by becoming the inaugural Louth Junior Close U19 Boys Champion, finishing on 108 Stableford points over 54 holes.

The County Louth golfer produced a remarkable comeback after difficult starts in both his second and final rounds. A treble bogey on the opening hole at Ardee was followed by 37 points, while a double bogey at Baltray threatened to derail his final round before Bohill responded spectacularly with birdie, birdie, eagle on holes two, three and four.

His eagle came after driving the green and holing a 10-foot putt, and another 37-point finish secured the title. Bohill recorded 11 birdies and an eagle during the championship.

Taylor Rice and Jack McKenna tied for second on 96 points, with Harley Phipps fourth on 95.

The victory came less than two weeks after Bohill won the inaugural Nancy Gannon WAGR Boys event, giving him back-to-back junior titles.

“Absolutely delighted to have won the very first championship, especially with the great bunch of lads I was surrounded by throughout the week.”

Bohill also hopes the championship becomes an annual fixture, believing it will provide valuable competitive opportunities for young golfers close to home.

The U15 Boys Caolan Rafferty Trophy produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the championship, with Daniel Cronin of Dundalk Golf Club recovering from an opening-round deficit to claim the title by a single point.

Cronin finished on 100 Stableford points, narrowly ahead of Seapoint’s Shay Garvey on 99, with Eoin Murphy of Greenore third on 89.

After an opening round of 29 points, Cronin produced one of the performances of the championship at Seapoint, carding a two-under-par 70 for 38 points. Despite being four over par after five holes, he fought back to play the final 13 holes in six under par.

He then returned 33 points at Baltray to secure the championship. His challenge was not without further drama, however, as his driver head cracked on the 12th tee, forcing him to play the final six holes without it.

“I didn’t let my head drop and dug deep. That performance kept me in contention.”

The victory was particularly meaningful for Cronin as the trophy honours Caolan Rafferty, a member of Dundalk Golf Club.

“It means a lot to me to be the first person to win the Caolan Rafferty Trophy and bring it back to Dundalk Golf Club, Caolan’s home club.”

Garvey’s outstanding opening round of level-par 72 had established him as the early leader, while Murphy opened with a 74, but Cronin’s remarkable Seapoint fightback ultimately proved decisive.

Elizabeth Sue Sharkey became the inaugural Louth Junior Close U20 Girls Champion after producing a superb comeback across the three rounds.

Sharkey began at Dundalk with just 16 points, eight behind opening-round leader Emily McShane. Rather than focus on the deficit, she adopted a simple approach and treated each round independently.

That strategy paid off at Seapoint, where Sharkey produced the best round of the championship with 28 points, moving to 44 and level with Isla Smith at the top of the leaderboard.

She then held her nerve at Baltray, adding 22 points to finish on 66, four clear of Smith on 62.

The victory was celebrated warmly by fellow competitors, friends and spectators as Sharkey completed her final round.

“I feel so privileged to be able to play. It was a well put together event and there was a great atmosphere around the few days in it.”

Sharkey also highlighted the importance of the championship in bringing young golfers together and inspiring the next generation.

“I would love to see this event annually because it inspires growth of junior golf which is fundamental to golf clubs.”

Emily McShane of Ardee Golf Club completed an impressive championship by becoming the inaugural U16 Girls Champion, finishing on 57 Stableford points.

McShane made an outstanding start with 24 points at Dundalk, on her first visit to the Blackrock course, before adding 17 at Seapoint and 16 at Baltray.

She finished seven points clear of County Louth’s Aoibhe Reilly, who recorded 50 points, and her performances were all the more impressive given that she also competed in the U20 division.

McShane’s opening-round performance put her firmly among the leading U20 players and earned her a place in the final group alongside eventual U20 champion Sharkey and runner-up Smith.

Her victory underlined the strength and potential of the emerging junior girls’ game in Louth.

While competition produced four deserving inaugural champions, the success of the championship extended far beyond the results.

The event demonstrated the value of the five-club collaborative approach, giving young golfers the opportunity to compete against players from across the county while experiencing different courses and building friendships and connections.

The standard of golf throughout the week was exceptional, but equally encouraging was the sportsmanship, enthusiasm and camaraderie displayed by the players.

The championship also showcased the strength of volunteerism within the participating clubs. Starters, ball spotters, registration teams, scorers, referees and rangers all contributed their time and expertise to ensure the event ran smoothly.

The atmosphere across all five venues created a genuine sense of occasion and demonstrated what can be achieved when clubs work together with a shared commitment to developing junior golf.
