A steady round saw Darren Clarke post a level-par 70 and remain firmly in the hunt for senior major glory at the Kaulig Companies Championship – formerly the Senior Players Championship – at Firestone Country Club in Ohio.

The 2011 Open and 2022 Senior Open champion is a former course winner having claimed the 2003 WGC-NEC Invitational there as a 35-year-old. He began the day tied for second after a four-under 66 in round one, and though birdies didn’t come as easily in the wind and rain in round two, he made two of them and limited the bogeys to the same number and goes into the weekend tied for fifth and just three back.

Australian Cameron Percy is the new tournament leader after a four-under 66 moved him to -7, overtaking overnight leader Jerry Kelly and Zach Johnson who made a fast start and took sole possession of the lead early in round two.

They remain in hot pursuit at -6, one shot back, with Boo Weekley holding solo fourth place at -5.

“You can’t fake it around here, you’ve got to hit it solid,” Percy said. “The par-3s are hard, everything’s hard. Like you’ve got to hit it really good, you can’t just slap it everywhere and shoot a 66.

“Like I played really good today and I only shot 66, that’s how hard this place is.”
