Robert Coles reeled in overnight leader Emanuele Canonica before producing a stunning late birdie blitz to open up a three-shot lead heading into the final round of the OFX Irish Legends after a second consecutive seven-under-par 65 at Carton House.

Cameron Clark remains best of the Irish contingent, despite a slow start he did well to claw his way back to a level-par 72 to sit on three-under and in a share of 20th place although he is eleven shots shy of Coles.

Coles leads the way on 14-under-par, with Sweden’s Johan Edfors his closest challenger on 11-under after climbing five places with a brilliant six-under-par 66. Overnight leader Emanuele Canonica slipped back to third on nine-under, while 2014 Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher and 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie share fifth on seven-under. Just one shot further back, big-hitting Englishman Craig Farrelly remains firmly in contention on six-under as he looks to secure a maiden Staysure Legends Tour title.

Coles began the day one shot behind Canonica, but while the Italian raced into a three-shot lead with back-to-back birdies at the third and fourth holes, the Englishman patiently stayed in touch before catching fire over the closing stretch. Four birdies across his final four holes lifted him to 14-under-par and firmly into control of the championship.

It was another composed display from Coles, despite admitting he was nowhere near as sharp from the tee as he had been during his opening round.

“I didn’t drive it anywhere near as well as I did yesterday,” said Coles. “But on the back nine I just got it going and before you know it you’re into it. That was a really good feeling.”

The decisive moment came after a gritty par save on the 14th after having to chip out from thick rough, before the Englishman birdied each of his final four holes to seize complete control of the tournament.

“The standout was actually the par on 14,” he said. “I had to chip out of the rough, so to make par the hard way kept me going. Then 15 is reachable, I hit it close on 16, made a good putt on 17 and 18 was scrappy. I don’t seem to like 18, but I’ve managed to get it done.”

Coles credited his putter for keeping him in contention during a front nine where he regularly found himself out of position off the tee.

“I putted great today. I three-putted the second but apart from that I holed a lot of really good putts. When you’re missing fairways it’s hard to get it close, so the putting really kept me going.”

Victory on Sunday would represent the second Staysure Legends Tour title of his career after breaking through at the 2024 Staysure PGA Seniors Championship. The former Challenge Tour player looks to add a second victory in Ireland to his roster, having won the 2009 Challenge of Ireland presented by Moyvalley.

“It would mean everything,” he said. “I really haven’t played that well over the last six to eight months, so to find a bit of form over these last two days is great. But you always want to see something at the end of it to validate it.”

Edfors, meanwhile, produced one of the rounds of the day to move from tied seventh overnight into outright second.

The three-time DP World Tour winner made his move on the back nine, with a clutch 20-foot birdie putt on the 10th proving the catalyst before further birdies at the 11th, 12th, 15th and 18th lifted him into outright second, three shots behind Coles.

“I gave myself a lot of good chances today and took good advantage of the par fives,” said Edfors. “The putt on 10 really got my round started.”

The Swede is chasing a maiden Staysure Legends Tour title. Edfors has shown encouraging signs since joining the over-50 ranks, with his best finish to date a tied-second result at the 2025 Sergio Melpignano Senior Italian Open.

“Obviously it would mean a lot,” he said. “It would be a good sign that the game is moving in the right direction again. I’ve had a couple of good tournaments but it hasn’t quite felt 100 per cent, so hopefully it’s coming together.”

Canonica looked set to strengthen his grip on the championship after birdies at the third and fourth gave him a three-shot advantage early in the round. However, a series of bogeys stalled his momentum and slipped back into third on nine-under.

Farrelly also remains firmly in contention as he bids for a breakthrough Staysure Legends Tour victory. One of the biggest hitters in the field, the Englishman has found the Montgomerie course well suited to his game, using his length off the tee to create plenty of birdie opportunities throughout the week.

Despite another solid round, Farrelly admitted he was left wanting more.

“It was a little frustrating,” he said. “I got off to a good start, then made a couple of bogeys and didn’t really take advantage of the par fives. I had good numbers into them and came away with pars, so that was disappointing.”

The positives, however, came from the continued progress in his iron play ahead of Sunday’s final round.

“I’ve been working on my distance control and those little knockdown shots, and they’ve worked perfectly this week. With ISPS Hands Senior Open coming up and another big round tomorrow, it’s nice to know I’ve got those extra yardages I can rely on now.”

Farrelly also praised the condition of the Montgomerie course.

“Most places in England are drying up, they look like the A1 motorway, but this place looks like Augusta. It’s a pleasure to play here and all credit to the team.”

2014 Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley eagled the par-5 8th for the second day running but carded another 73 to sit on two-over while Peter Lawrie and Gary Murphy are eleven and twelve over respectively.

With just 18 holes remaining, Coles will look to secure his second Staysure Legends Tour title, while Edfors and Farrelly are both chasing breakthrough victories on the over-50 circuit. Canonica remains in contention despite surrendering the lead, while Scottish duo Gallacher and Lawrie will need to go low to have any hope in what promises to be a fascinating final round at Carton House.
