Lottie Woad fired an excellent round of 64 to claim top spot on 11-under-par at the halfway stage of the Amundi Evian Championship, but it was disappointment for Leona Maguire and Lauren Walsh as both missed the cut.
The English world number four began the day in a share of eighth place, four strokes behind overnight leader Aki Iwai.
Woad rolled in birdies on the third, seventh and ninth to turn at three-under. She dropped her only shot on the 10th but responded with three straight birdies on holes 11 to 13. A birdie on 15 brought her into a share of the lead, before another on 18 gave her the outright lead on 11-under-par.
“I hit a lot of fairways and greens, which is definitely the key around here,” said Woad. “I just made a few more putts today really. The driver is clicking, I’ve been very good off the tee.”
Japan’s Aki Iwai, who led by two overnight, made early birdies on 11, 12 and 15 before a double bogey on the sixth dropped her to 10-under-par in solo second.
Korea’s Haeran Ryu and Japan’s Mao Saigo share third on eight-under after rounds of 68.
Four players tie for fifth on six-under: Charley Hull, Nastasia Nadaud, Jeeno Thitikul and Miyu Yamashita.
Nadaud posted her second 68, while Thitikul fired a bogey-free 64 featuring five birdies and an eagle.
Eight players sit on five-under in a share of tenth, including Perrine Delacour, Maja Stark, Anna Nordqvist and Brooke Henderson.
The cut fell at level-par, with 66 players advancing, but Maguire and Walsh weren’t among them. After birdieing two of her final three holes in round one to get back to level-par, Maguire got into red figures for the tournament with a birdie on the fourth hole in round two but it was short-lived and followed by back-to-back bogeys. From there, she made two birdies and four bogeys on the way home and finished at three-over.
Walsh had two more shots to pick up and she birdied the 15th – her sixth – to make a first step in the right direction but followed it with three bogeys to leaver herself a mountain to climb.
Birdies on one and two gave her a fighting chance, but two swift bogeys ended all hope and she finished a shot behind Maguire at +4.
Round three begins at 8.40 am local time, with the leaders teeing off at 10.40 am.
