Following concerns over spectator behaviour at recent major championships, the R&A has announced that a formal code of conduct – The Open Commitment – will be in place for fans at the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

With an expected attendance of around 300,000 at the Southport venue next week, the new protocol aims “to ensure that players, spectators, volunteers, officials, staff and the local community can enjoy a welcoming, inclusive and memorable experience.” Guidelines will be communicated to ticket holders via on-site signage, digital channels, and pre-event information.

The move comes in the wake of the treatment of Wyndham Clark during the final round of last month’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Long Island galleries were occasionally hostile towards the American, with unfriendly remarks, jeers on missed shots, and even silence in response to strong play. Several spectators were removed from the course. Despite the reception, Clark held firm to claim his second major title by one stroke.

While Open crowds have a long reputation for being knowledgeable and respectful, there have been notable exceptions in the past. Most notably, in 2023 at Royal Liverpool, eventual champion Brian Harman faced unsportsmanlike treatment from sections of the gallery.

R&A CEO Mark Darbon emphasised the importance of preserving the unique atmosphere of the championship:

“The atmosphere at the Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.”

“The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes the Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure the Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all.”

With Royal Birkdale set to host a memorable week, the R&A’s initiative should help ensure the 2026 Championship upholds the high standards of sportsmanship that the galleries have traditionally helped foster.

The 154th Open Championship tees off next week, with Scottie Scheffler defending his title.
