Sergio Garcia has confirmed his intention to regain full playing status on the DP World Tour, with plans to compete more regularly on the circuit in the coming years.

The 2017 Masters champion originally joined LIV Golf in 2022 and has had a fluctuating relationship with the DP World Tour since. After re-joining for the 2025 season, he opted not to renew his membership for 2026 but has now set his sights on a return in 2027.

Speaking to reporters at last week’s BMW International Open in Munich, Garcia made his ambitions clear.

“Yes, I’m going to play a little bit. I’m going to play probably four more, counting [BMW International Open],” he said.

“It’s obviously something that I’ve always said that I wanted to do and I’m trying to do the best I can there. Obviously, at 46, I can’t play 30 events a year, but I’m going to make an effort to see if I can at least play a handful and try to do my best there.”

Garcia was joined in Munich by his Fireballs GC teammate Jose Luis Ballester, who is also targeting DP World Tour membership in 2027. Both players competed on the European circuit last week as they look to build on their limited starts.

The move comes against a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf’s future. The Saudi-backed league is entering 2027 without its original Public Investment Fund backing and is currently seeking new investors, reportedly targeting around $300 million. Plans are understood to include a reduced schedule of 10 events, featuring five ‘Team Majors’ and five ‘Signature Events’.

Despite the challenges, Garcia remains confident in the breakaway tour’s survival.

“It looks good,” the Fireballs captain claimed. “Obviously, I think they’ve had a lot of meetings with different possible investors. I’m 99 percent sure that LIV is going to continue.

“It’s just going to look different than it has the last four years. But I’m very, very confident that it’s going to keep going. We’ll see how it develops.”

The Spaniard’s comments will be of interest to Irish golf fans, given the strong traditional ties between Irish players and the DP World Tour. With several Irish professionals competing regularly on the circuit, Garcia’s planned return adds another high-profile name to the mix as the tour continues to balance its calendar with the growing influence of LIV Golf.
