Gavin O’Neill continues to lead the Irish charge at the halfway point of the St Andrews Links Trophy.

The Malahide man is in a share of sixteenth place on three-under-par after a second round of 69 on the Old Course at St Andrews that leaves him eight shots behind Frenchman Lev Grinberg.

It could have been better for O’Neill had he not finished bogey, bogey but he will know that there is a score out there on Sunday. He had carded four birdies and a bogey in his first ten holes and with 36 holes to go he isn’t entirely out of contention if he can perform in a similar fashion.

One shot behind O’Neill is Gavin Tiernan after a 71 of his own and Fionn Dobbin of Malone after a 72.

County Louth’s Tiernan, who was part of the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team last year, was also flying at three-under through ten holes before handing those shots back on 14, 15 and 17 but he did birdie the last to restore some parity.

Keith Egan of Carton House also made it into the final 36 holes in a share of 30th place on one-under after a 72 as the cut fell on that mark.
