Tramore native Ian St John has stormed to an incredible 16-stroke victory in the net championship at the South African G4D Open supported by Nomads at The Wanderers Golf Club.
Net rounds of 69, 66 and 69 left the Irishman on nine-under after the three rounds, and he was the only player to finish the event in red figures with South Africa’s own Robin Rambo Singh finishing second at +7.
Paralysed from the waist down after contracting cancer over a decade ago, the former Head Professional at Rush Golf Club now plays using a ParaGolfer that holds him upright and allows him to swing the club.
St John recorded 14 net birdies and five net eagles over the course of the three rounds, with his best performance coming in round two where two regulation birdies on par-3s became net ‘ones’.
“Can not believe I’m saying these words… I’m the 2025 South African Open Champion,” St. John wrote on social media. “Very emotional, lost for words and thanks to everyone for all the messages of support. Means the world.”
He finished ninth overall in the Physically Disabled Gross division, won by Spain’s Juan Postigo.
