Rory McIlroy and Seamus Power are both four shots off the pace at the halfway stage of the RBC Heritage in Harbour Town.

Both players had contrasting second rounds with McIlroy showing signs of improvement with his iron play, ranking 14th in strokes gained approach on Friday while Power let some shots slip late on.

McIlroy carded a bogey free round of 68 with birdies coming on the 1st, 12th and 15th while Power was forced to settle for a 70 after bogeys on 12 and 15 halted his progress.

The West Waterford man had a share of the lead heading into the back nine after birdies on the 5th, 6th and 9th but both players now sit in 12th place on seven-under.

A quartet of Tom Huge, Sepp Straka, Collin Morikawa and JT Poston lead get way on eleven-under with Masters runner-up Ludvig Åberg a shot further back.

Morikawa continued his return to form with a five-under 66 despite missing ten greens.

“Still have a lot of trust in the swing,” he said. “Whether it went right or wrong, I was able to kind of accept the fact and move on. Two or three months ago — or even two weeks ago — if I saw a couple of bad shots it was like, ‘What do I fix? What do I try?’

“I kind of roughly know where the ball is going, and even when I’m missing it, still everything is a little bit tighter,” he said. “That’s all you can ask for.”

World number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler played just nine holes of practice earlier in the week and he is three shots off the pace on eights-under after a bogey free round of 65.

“Didn’t really struggle for par too often today,” Scheffler said. “I felt like I was attacking the golf course pretty well. Was able to post a good number. I felt like today when I stepped on the first tee I was ready to go.”
