Robert Moran is flying high in the infancy of his professional career as he opened with a round of 66 at the Red Sea Little Venice Open in Egypt.

Moran carded a bogey-free round to sit in a share of 5th place on six-under, just four shots off the pace.

Playing the course from back to front, Moran hit 17 greens in regulation at Sokhna GC, carding birdies on 14, 17 and 3 before finishing with three birdies in his last four holes.

“I played pretty well, the fourth hole which was my thirteenth was the only green in regulation that I missed all day so that was pretty nice to hit seventeen greens,” said the Castle golfer who is making just his second Alps Tour appearance.

“My front nine was more scoreable and it was pretty calm just missed some chances for birdies, made a nice one on 14 which was my 5th hole from 35 feet but apart from that I missed a few looks from 6-8 feet.

“Made a few putts on the back nine and two putted the par fives so it wasn’t too stressful of a day.”

The Alps Tour campaign has opened with an Egyptian swing and Moran is enjoying life as a budding professional so far.

“The Alps Tour has been good so far, we are in Egypt and nine of he holes are the same as last week, it’s a 27-hole complex so there wasn’t much learning to be done between the two tournaments.

“The hotel and resort is nice and the food is… interesting. The weather is perfect and not much to complain about so far!”

Meanwhile, Brandon St John is two-under-par after an opening 70 while AJ McCabe and Paul Murphy are part of a logjam of players on one-under.

Marc Boucher is level-par while Paul McBride is plus three.
