Naas amateur Jamie Butler is just three shots off the lead in the latest Toro Tour event at the Atalaya New Course in Spain.

Butler carded an opening round of 67 to sit on four-under-par, while Scotland’s Cormac Sharpe leads the way on seven-under.

Butler who plays collegiate golf in America has been something of a golfing globetrotter, winning in Cyprus last year. Today, he opened with a birdie and a bogey to start before birdies at seven and ten moved him to two-under.

A strong finish saw him reel off a hat trick of birdies from the fourteenth before he gave a shot back on the par-3 17th.

Galway man Ronan Mullarney warmed up for the upcoming Challenge Tour season with a two-under 69.

James Temple is level-par after a 71 while Karl McCormack is +1, Eoin Freeman is +3 and Jamie Foley is +4.
