Maynooth University’s Eoin Murphy moved to within five shots of the lead heading into the final round of the 15th King Hamad Trophy in Bahrain.

Murphy (Dundalk) carded a superb bogey-free round go 68 to climb to four-under-par and into a share of fourth place as England’s Gary King hit the front on nine-under.

Murphy, a Student Tour Series winner in Spain in September opened with a birdie before adding another on the fifth. He added two more birdies on 15 and 18 to compete a fine round at Royal Golf Club.

The Louth man is the leading amateur after 36 holes with fellow Maynooth student David Kitt (Athenry) on three-under-par after a level-par 72 to leave him in sixth place.

Back-to-back rounds of 72 have Simon Walker (Roscommon) in 21st place while Alex King missed the cut despite an improved 74.
