Sara Byrne shot a second round of 63 in the Hurricane invitational to break the 18-hole programme record at Miami University.

It leaves the Douglas star on fifteen-under-par and a whopping seven shots clear of Emma Falcher (South Florida) heading into the final round at Biltmore Golf Course.

Byrne, fresh off her maiden collegiate win before representing Ireland at the World Amateur Team Championships last week is bidding for a second collegiate title in as many starts.

After opening her week with a bogey-free round of 66 Byrne dropped just one shot when she went back out in the afternoon.

The Irish Close champion lit up the back nine coming home in a sensational 29 including an eagle on the 18th to leave the chasing pack in her wake.

Byrne enjoyed a fruitful summer backing up her Close win with low amateur honours at the KPMG Irish Women’s Open and she seems to be going from strength to strength having co-lead at last week’s Espírito Santo Trophy after round one.

“The whole year has been very good for me,” said Byrne.

“It’s a really good feeling winning, so having the Close and getting my first collegiate win, which was a massive goal for me coming into college golf, getting that under my belt is a really good feeling and getting low-amateur at the Irish Open, all the goals that I have I am ticking off.

“It’s a great confidence boost and great momentum. It’s a bit like I’m in cruise control.”
