Simon Walker took charge at the top of the leaderboard after Round 1 of the Irish Intervarsity Championships at Laytown & Bettystown.

Only seven players shot under par on the opening day and the Maynooth University star was outstanding as he finished up with a 66 and -5 total.

That was enough to secure a one shot lead ahead of UCD golfer Emma Fleming, who recently took home the Bridgestone Order of Merit title.

Fleming was on target with a 67 today while Ryan Griffin (Maynooth University) chipped in with a -2 total alongside Eoin Murphy (Maynooth University).

Liam Abom (Maynooth University), Shea Dorman (Maynooth University) and Jordan Boles (Maynooth University) also managed to shoot under par.

Meanwhile, Maynooth University are first and second in the overall team event with UCD in third and fourth after the first round.
